Linda Lipko has worked at Lehigh since 1984. In 2003, she assumed the new position of publications coordinator for the Department of Journalism and Communication. Before that, she had been our department coordinator.
As publications coordinator, Linda has overall responsibility for day-to-day operation of the department, and she directly oversees the business staff of our student newspaper, The Brown and White, and the editorial staff and production of our yearbook, the Epitome.
Linda's accounting background has been important in keeping both publications in good financial condition. She monitors income and expenses, works on annual budgets, helps students plan advertising campaigns, and negotiates contracts with printers and other suppliers.
Above all, she is a mentor to the students who work on our publications. She annually travels with a small group of student yearbook editors to the National College Yearbook Workshop, where they attend intensive sessions that will prepare them for the next year's work. Largely thanks to Linda, our Epitome yearbook thrives, with annual sales that exceed the number of graduating seniors, at a time when yearbooks at other colleges and universities are failing.
For the student newspaper's business staff, Linda advises them on ad sales strategies, meets regularly with them to set goals and to encourage and critique their work, and trains them in all aspects of the financial side of the operation. The Brown and White's continued financial stability owes a lot to Linda's patient guidance.
During the summer, Linda prepares for the next academic year by sending out newspaper subscription renewals, contacting advertisers with information about rates and publication schedules, and sending yearbook letters to parents with information about putting personal messages in the book and buying a copy for their graduating senior.
